Add your thoughts using the KWL approach. Thinking about Game Mechanics, Games-Based Learning or gamification.....
K = What do you know? Games are engaging. Children learn through play. Many early numeracy skills and number sense is learn through games - although it's dependant on excellent facilitator questioning. W = What do you want to learn? What theory or research is available on Games-Based Learning. What is gamification? What is Game Mechanics? What is the involvement of the teacher in the learning process for students? L = What have you learned? (we'll do this last one later)
Gamification is an easy option that I've used for years in teaching. It is bringing the elements of a game into an activity - competiveness/ scoring/ charts etc. Games based learning that is still a long way from my understanding...A challenging objective though.
I've learnt that the definition of having 'fun' could make educators/bosses think that 'serious' learning wasn't occurring therefore that needs to be addressed when providing feedback to said superiors about any given learning activity.
Reflection
Add your thoughts here and also add to the KWL notes above, where appropriate.
I'm challenged that games designers have thought more about how children learn and how they stay engaged than we as educators do.
I like the idea of someone else designing the game based learning programs and making them commercially (or free!) available. I'm not sure I would aspire to developing them myself as such, however, I do think I could work with the Story to Challenge to Creating the look & feel of a game with any given class activity.... I think I could look at the elements of Game Mechanics - Dynamics, Mechanics, Components and develop Mathematical challenges that become 'gamified'.
I still need to learn more about the Dynamics, Mechanics, Components - maybe need a COMPLETE list of what would be in each element.
Level 2
Where do I start?
Identify some learning outcomes that you will be visiting with your students in upcoming lessons. Note down here some ways they might benefit from gamification.
Observe and reflect After playing a game what are your personal thoughts about the design and elements involved and how any of these could help you in thinking about doing the same in a learning activity?
Level 3
